At the age of 5, Tiago knew tennis would be his lifelong dream and career. A native of Brazil, he was consistently ranked in the top three nationally for singles and doubles posting wins over Lleyton Hewitt and Roger Federer.
Tiago accepted a tennis scholarship with SEC powerhouse Auburn University, where he played among the top three players from 1999 to 2002. His team ranked number 12 in the nation in 2002, reaching the elite 8 in the NCAA tournament. Tiago’s highest NCAA Division I ranking was 19 in singles and 1 in doubles.
After college, Tiago pursued his dream of playing professionally in the Pro Circuit, traveling internationally and achieving a world ranking in singles and doubles. Due to an ongoing tennis injury, he had to leave his tennis playing career to recover.
Tiago held the position of Men’s and Women’s graduate assistant coach at Winthrop University from 2007-08, leading the women’s team to capture the BIG SOUTH conference title. From 2010-2016, Tiago worked at the Rock Hill Tennis Center (RHTC) as Head Tennis Pro where he coached players of all ages and levels. Some of his former players achieved state rankings while some have gone on to receive scholarships to play Division I tennis at prestigious colleges.
Recently Tiago won two national doubles championships and was named USPTA Southern and USTA North Carolina male player of the year. He is regarded as one of the top teaching and playing professionals in the Charlotte-metro area.
